THE BELLHOP WAY
Four generations. One Lisbon tradition.
Founded in 1955, A Severa is Lisbon’s oldest Fado house still run by the same family, now in its fourth generation. Set in Bairro Alto, one of the city’s most emblematic neighbourhoods, it has welcomed some of the great names of Fado and continues to celebrate Portuguese music and traditional cuisine.
Inside, warm candlelight and tiled scenes of Lisbon set the mood for an intimate evening. As the voices and guitars fill the room, discover the feeling of saudade: a longing that gives many Fado songs their emotional depth. Fado can also be joyful, celebratory or playful — a living expression of Portuguese life. Recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2011, it remains closely tied to Lisbon.
The house takes its name from Maria Severa, the celebrated 19th-century singer whose voice and story became part of Fado’s cultural memory. That tradition lives on through heartfelt performances and the flavours of Portuguese cooking.
